Voynich Puzzle
The Voynich Puzzle draws players into the enduring mystery of the Voynich Manuscript, a real medieval book that has defied interpretation for more than six centuries. Its strange illustrations, unknown language and unclear purpose have inspired countless theories, yet no definitive answers. In this game the manuscript is now in your hands, and you will attempt to decipher its secrets while shaping your own understanding of its contents.
Players each receive a physical book that represents their personal copy of the manuscript. On your turn you choose a double page and resolve the actions shown at the top of those pages. Each pair of pages corresponds to one of five sections of the manuscript, botany, astrology, baths, writing and recipes. By taking actions you gain knowledge in these areas, improving your ability to interpret what the manuscript contains.
As collective understanding grows, players unlock shared discoveries. When enough knowledge is accumulated in a section, it is revealed to everyone, represented by flipping and turning cards within each player’s book. These breakthroughs provide stronger actions and improved endgame scoring opportunities, making the gradual deciphering of the manuscript the central objective of play.
Although players benefit from shared knowledge, victory is individual. You must balance contributing to the collective effort with advancing your own expertise. The game ends when a player reaches the endgame space, after which final turns and scoring determine who has achieved the deepest understanding.
Designed for one to four players, The Voynich Puzzle offers a thoughtful blend of cooperation, competition and discovery, leaving players with the feeling of having explored something truly unknowable.
