Kelp
Beneath the swaying fronds of a South African kelp forest, two remarkable predators begin a battle that has been unfolding in nature for millions of years. One player becomes a clever Common Octopus, slipping silently through the underwater maze while searching for food and avoiding detection. The other commands a determined Pyjama Shark, patiently hunting for even the smallest clue that might reveal its elusive prey. Every decision feels like another move in a tense underwater duel where patience, timing and deception matter just as much as bold action.
Kelp is an asymmetrical game for two players where each side follows completely different rules and pursues its own path to victory. The Octopus relies on a deck of cards to move, camouflage itself and manipulate information on the board. Hidden and revealed blocks create uncertainty, forcing the Shark to question every assumption while trying to predict where its opponent will appear next.
Playing as the Shark creates a very different experience. Instead of managing cards, you build a bag of dice that represents your growing hunting abilities. Each turn involves moving through the kelp forest, searching for signs of the Octopus and carefully managing your dice to maximise the chance of a successful attack. Special abilities help reduce the effects of luck while encouraging calculated risks as the hunt intensifies.
The game ends in one of three ways. The Shark wins by successfully attacking the Octopus. The Octopus can instead survive until the Shark becomes exhausted or successfully consume all four seafood objectives hidden around the board. Every ending delivers a memorable finale that rewards careful planning, clever adaptation and the satisfaction of outthinking a worthy opponent.
