Too Many Board Games? Good!

There has never been so many brilliant board games to choose from, which should make finding your next favourite game easier than ever, but I think it's actually created the opposite problem. There are thousands of games, hundreds of new releases arriving every year and an almost endless supply of rankings, reviews, recommendations and lists telling you what you should play next, and when you're faced with that much choice it's incredibly easy to decide you'll have a proper look later, go back to something you already know or simply not start looking at all.

I think that's a real shame because discovering something new is one of my favourite parts of this hobby, and you shouldn't need to know the difference between worker placement and deck building, spend an evening researching BoardGameGeek or scroll through page after page of games just to find something that might work for you. Sometimes you just know who you're going to be playing with and roughly how much thinking you fancy doing, and that should be enough to get you moving in the right direction.

That's why I've built the Find Your Next Favourite Game quiz into the new Boardgamist. It's deliberately quick and simple because it isn't trying to learn everything about you or declare that one particular box is your perfect board game, it's there to give you an initial guiding hand through the collection, cut down that enormous wall of choice and show you a much smaller selection of games that actually make sense for what you're looking for.

Hopefully that makes finding something new feel a little easier, but I also hope it occasionally sends you somewhere unexpected because some of the best discoveries in board gaming happen when you find something you would never have thought to search for yourself. There are brilliant games sitting on shelves that don't have enormous marketing campaigns behind them, aren't dominating bestseller charts and might have a slightly strange looking box, but put them in front of the right group of people and they can become the game everybody wants to play again.

The quiz is only the beginning of that process and that's intentional. Boardgamist isn't trying to replace a conversation with an algorithm, and if you've got something more specific in mind then get in touch and give me your brief. Tell me who you're playing with, what you've enjoyed before, how long you've got, what you definitely don't want or whatever other oddly specific requirements your game night has, and I'll help you find the perfect match.

There are too many great board games out there for the sheer amount of choice to stop us discovering them.

Take the quiz, narrow things down and see where you end up.
